For the first time since 1950, NASCAR has two first-time winners in the first two races heading into the Dixie Vodka 400. A Cinderella story in Michael McDowell paired with a rising talent meeting his potential (Christopher Bell) means fresh faces inside their playoff field already. Heading to Homestead-Miami Speedway, a third straight week in Florida, can the sport go an unprecedented three-for-three?

There are a few good candidates ready and waiting on the winless list. Tyler Reddick, running his second season for Richard Childress Racing, was fourth at this 1.5-mile speedway last June. He won two straight NASCAR Xfinity Series championships here by mastering the high line around this racetrack.

Matt DiBenedetto is now the longest-tenured full-time NASCAR Cup Series driver without a victory (214 starts). He's also off to an ugly start, finishing 33rd and 37th at the two Daytona races to sit 37th in the season standings. It's way too early to think about the playoffs but when part-time, road course ringer Scott Heckert has nearly double your point total? That's a problem. A surprise win at HMS would go a long way to keeping everyone focused on a No. 21 team that's already been told there's a driver change coming for 2022 (Austin Cindric).

Once a longshot, Bubba Wallace has the equipment to be a contender with 23XI Racing and Michael Jordan at the helm. Co-owner Denny Hamlin will be a great mentor this weekend; he's got five straight poles here and dominated this race last June.

But the biggest wild card is a driver with a different type of drought. Kyle Larson has plenty of Cup victories to his credit (six, to be exact) but zero since speaking a racial slur that destroyed his 2020 NASCAR season. His new ride at Hendrick Motorsports has the speed to get it done at a track Larson's flirted with victory lane several times.

If Larson gets over the hump, will people be willing to forgive and forget in an era where NASCAR is pushing diversity like never before? Similar to when Michael Vick returned to the NFL after animal cruelty charges, strong opinions on both sides will emerge if Larson goes from the penthouse to the playoffs this quickly.

As for NASCAR's return to oval racing? This intermediate debuts the sport's low-horsepower, high-downforce package, used to increase competition on cookie-cutter ovals. The slower speeds help tire wear although this 1.5-miler still has a tendency to chew up Goodyears and spit them out. A groove high up, right next to the outside wall means any small mistake by the driver could be disastrous.

Will a Cinderella emerge from a package designed to bring more drivers into the mix? Or does a return to cookie-cutter racing bring normalcy along with it?

Date: Sunday, Feb. 28

Time: 3:30 p.m. ET

Track: Homestead-Miami Speedway (Homestead, Fla.)

TV: FOX

Radio: MRN, SIRIUS XM Channel 90

Who's at the Front: Christopher Bell

Ending reigning NASCAR champion Chase Elliott's four-race win streak on road courses is no small feat. Winning in your second start in a new ride? That’s the cherry on top after a rough rookie season for Bell at Leavine Family Racing.

Suffice it to say the new digs at Joe Gibbs Racing have a little better equipment and resources. This former dirt racer has made the most of it already, leading a career-high 32 laps in the season-opening Daytona 500 before running Joey Logano down in the closing laps last Sunday. Suddenly, Erik Jones is a distant memory as Bell won quicker than anyone else who's driven the No. 20 Toyota... a list that includes Hall of Famer Tony Stewart and former Cup champion Matt Kenseth.

Who's at the Back: Chase Briscoe

Briscoe took over the No. 14 Ford from Clint Bowyer for 2021 after trampling over the NASCAR Xfinity Series competition (nine wins). But it’s been two wrecks in two races, underwhelming performances at tracks where the freshman was expected to shine. His closest competition for top rookie honors, Anthony Alfredo, sits just three points behind him thus far despite inferior equipment and limited experience.

News Briefs

Ty Gibbs is still riding high after winning his NASCAR Xfinity Series debut on Daytona's road course. Gibbs talked about his surprise victory this week on the Frontstretch podcast, just the sixth driver to win his first start, while grandpa Joe wasted no time in expanding his schedule. The 18-year-old phenom will run 14 additional NXS races while running for the ARCA Menards Series championship.

A longtime NASCAR analyst is giving up the broadcast booth for the pit box this weekend. Former Jeff Gordon and Dale Earnhardt Jr. crew chief Steve Letarte will assume the role for Corey LaJoie and Spire Motorsports this weekend. He'll take charge for the first time since 2014 as full-time head wrench Ryan Sparks steps away from the team due to COVID-19 protocols.

Speaking of COVID-19 protocol, Chip Ganassi won't be at the track this weekend after violating NASCAR rules surrounding the virus. Ganassi was also fined $30,000 for bringing a "non-essential" individual into his pit box at Daytona International Speedway last weekend.

NASCAR by the Numbers

66

Gap between Denny Hamlin, the current points leader, and the playoff cutline after just two races.

21st

Finishing position for Chase Elliott at the Daytona road course, his worst run on that track type since blowing an engine at Sonoma Raceway in June 2019.

Playing the Odds (Fantasy Spin)

Top Tier

Kevin Harvick is used to racing for a championship at a track that used to be the season finale. Last year, Homestead's place on the schedule changed and so did Harvick's history of strong runs last June: 26th was the worst finish of his career at this track. I don't expect bad lightning to strike twice at an oval where the 45-year-old has earned top-10 finishes in 85 percent of his career starts (17-for-20).

Kyle Busch has won two championships here by winning the Homestead finale in 2015 and 2019. Overall, in his last six starts he's run no worse than sixth, leading 228 laps and earning a stage victory in 2019. A 24th-place starting spot gives him more upside than Denny Hamlin because of point differential bonuses.

Middle Tier

Kyle Larson may not have won a race at Homestead yet. But no one has more stage wins (three) since the advent of the current format in 2017. Only the championship battles, at times, have kept Larson from waltzing into victory lane. No one benefits more from the recent schedule changes and a 17th-place starting spot could mean excellent position differential.

Aric Almirola could be overlooked as he's never led a lap here in 11 career starts. But a fifth-place finish at HMS last June was a career best, righting the ship of a roller-coaster season and sent him surging into the NASCAR playoffs. Can he dip into that well once again after a sloppy start to 2021?

Lower Tier

Michael McDowell remains popular in this space after his Daytona 500 win. But no shame comes from riding the hot had; Homestead's another track where it makes sense to start the surging veteran. He's got a top-10 finish here (2016) and was a respectable 15th with Front Row Motorsports last June.

Anthony Alfredo is running just his third Cup race as McDowell's FRM teammate. However, John Hunter Nemechek scored a surprise top 20 with this car last season and Alfredo has the talent to do better: he was fourth and 11th in two career Xfinity Series starts here.

What Vegas Thinks

Kevin Harvick is leading the way with 9/2 odds on vegasinsider.com. Denny Hamlin is next, at 5/1 odds, followed by Martin Truex Jr. (13/2), Kyle Busch (15/2) and Chase Elliott (15/2).

Kyle Larson is next up at 10/1 and is easily the best option outside the top 5.

It's time for the third consecutive race in sunny Florida for the NASCAR Cup Series this season, this time at Homestead-Miami Speedway. The Dixie Vodka 400 is set to air on Sunday at 3:30 p.m. ET on FOX and Joy Tomlinson from Frontstretch.com has your latest fantasy preview for NASCAR DraftKings.

After turning both left and right last week on Daytona International Speedway's 3.61-mile road course, drivers return to oval racing with a 1.5-miler. The former longtime host of the season finale, Homestead's been switched around the schedule since November 2019. The 2020 race was held in June due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and this year, it's at the end of February.

Homestead is abrasive on Goodyears, so drivers will need to manage tire wear throughout the event. Additionally, racers often like to ride up against the wall at this place, which can cause problems if they get too close. Choose wisely among those who can handle the closest version to a Darlington stripe we'll see on the circuit outside the Lady In Black.

I'll need to choose wisely myself this week after a disastrous lineup on the road course. My DraftKings roster scored 65.55 points after three drivers — Chase Briscoe, Tyler Reddick and Ross Chastain — recorded negative scores. It also didn't help that Chase Elliott went off track twice in the closing laps, ruining what looked to be a near-certain victory. At least Martin Truex Jr. and Daniel Suarez had more than 40 fantasy points each.

Overall, 220.6 DraftKings points were needed to cash the large $1 single entry double up, while 261.7 earned $1.57 in the $1 Happy Hour tournament.

DraftKings lowered the points for each fastest lap to 0.45, as well as the points awarded for first place to 45. DraftKings has also put more emphasis on drivers who finish in the top 10 and top 20. For example, the gap between 10th and 11th place is now two points instead of one: 10th gets 34 points, while 11th gets 32.

Here's a complete rundown of DraftKings' NASCAR scoring rules.

Note: the following is a sample DraftKings lineup from Joy Tomlinson; you can use the information to create your own.

Daily Fantasy NASCAR DraftKings Plays/Sample Lineup for the Dixie Vodka 400 at Homestead-Miami Speedway

Kyle Larson ($10,700)

Career at Homestead: 7 starts, 0 wins, 3 top fives, 3 top 10s

Average finish at Homestead: 13.0

Welcome back to the DraftKings lineup, Larson! He's getting used to racing in a Cup car again and has shown great speed in the first two races of 2021. The new driver of the No. 5 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet finished 10th in the Daytona 500 and was running inside the top five last week when he made a mistake and crashed into the tires. It was a disappointing finish after such a strong race throughout.

Larson has a chance to bounce back this week at Homestead, a place where he's led more than 100 laps each in 2016 and 2017. Though he has yet to win there, he did come very close in 2016 before Jimmie Johnson passed him in the closing laps to win his seventh title. Larson also wound up third in 2017.

At Atlanta Motor Speedway in 2019, Larson led 142 laps before finishing 12th. Then in 2017, he ran second, one of three top 10s overall at the Georgia track. Atlanta is comparable to Homestead as it also causes tires to wear out quickly, another positive sign he'll run well Sunday.

Larson begins 17th and can pass several cars to possibly win or finish well, so long as he doesn't get too close to the wall or other vehicles. He should at least meet his value on DraftKings.

Kevin Harvick ($10,100)

Career at Homestead: 20 starts, 1 win, 11 top fives, 17 top 10s

Average finish at Homestead: 7.4

Ah, finally, a strong racetrack for Harvick. It's simply incredible that he's ended in the top 10 in all but three races at Homestead. Unfortunately, one of those came last year where he battled a tight car early on before getting damaged on pit road. Then, after his crew made extensive repairs, the 2014 Cup Series champ cut a tire down. Harvick ended up with his worst finish at this track (26th).

However, the 45-year-old's been outstanding here before that (when HMS was the final race of the season). The No. 4 Stewart-Haas Racing pilot notched six straight top fives from 2014-19, the first of which was a victory after leading 54 laps. In addition, Harvick led 58 laps in 2018 and 41 laps in 2019 while challenging for another title.

Atlanta has been kind to him as well, as Harvick's earned two wins in the last three years. He also finished in the top 10 in six consecutive events and has flat out dominated there for several years.

The Ford driver starts fourth on Sunday, which does make him risky if he encounters the same problems as last year. Still, solid track history shows that he'll be a strong contender.

Denny Hamlin ($9,600)

Career at Homestead: 16 starts, 3 wins, 5 top fives, 11 top 10s

Average finish at Homestead: 9.9

I really don't know why DraftKings gave Hamlin a $9,600 salary. That's really undervaluing him, as he's earned two top fives so far this season. He is starting on the pole like he's done in five of the past six Homestead events, so that is probably why there's a lower price.

Though Hamlin began on the pole so much in recent years, he didn't really capitalize on that position until last June when he led 137 laps en route to victory. The race was delayed many times due to weather and finished under the lights; will Hamlin's handling be different during the daylight this time around? We'll soon find out.

The driver of the No. 11 Toyota for Joe Gibbs Racing also had a good result at Atlanta in 2020, a fifth-place result after starting 10th. Hamlin also finished fourth in 2018 and won the 2012 event.

Look for the Joe Gibbs Racing veteran to rack up those fantasy points for laps led and fastest laps.

Austin Dillon ($7,700)

Career at Homestead: 7 starts, 0 wins, 0 top fives, 2 top 10s

Average finish at Homestead: 12.6

Dillon has slowly but surely improved each time he competes at Homestead. Last June, he gained nine positions to finish seventh, while the year prior he began 22nd and ended eighth. He and the No. 3 Richard Childress Racing team has found speed and can really attack this track; he tacked on six fastest laps in last year's event.

What's even better is that Dillon will start 22nd on Sunday and can earn a lot of DraftKings points if he moves through the field. The 2018 Daytona 500 winner can continue to achieve a good result this week if he keeps his car clean.

Dillon's RCR teammate Reddick is another option, as he's starting 35th and finished fourth last year (though he started slowing down on the last lap!).

Honorable Mention

Daniel Suarez ($5,700)

Career at Homestead: 4 starts, 0 wins, 0 top fives, 0 top 10s

Average finish at Homestead: 27.2

OK, so maybe Suarez hasn't gotten the hang of Homestead in the Cup Series yet. However, he did finish 14th there in 2019, which isn't bad considering. He also earned a sixth-place showing and a victory in 2015 and 2016, respectively, in the NASCAR Xfinity Series.

Also, at Atlanta, Suarez finished 10th in 2019 and 15th in 2018, fairly good results for a similar track.

Suarez is now driving the No. 99 car for Trackhouse Racing and finished in 16th last week at the Daytona road course. It was quite the run for a guy who started 35th and got sick in the latter half of the race. This week, he'll drive from 21st and hope to move through the field while continuing to learn about his new car setup.

His salary remains low for the third race in a row, which is truly puzzling. Take advantage of it while you can and plug him into your lineup.

Dark Horse Performer

Anthony Alfredo ($5,500)

Xfinity Series career at Homestead: 2 starts, 0 wins, 1 top five, 1 top 10

Xfinity average finish at Homestead: 7.5

"Another rookie? You know what happened last time you played a rookie, right?" Yes, I know; Chase Briscoe had a very rough time last week en route to 32nd. Alfredo, however, attained nine spots in that same race to end up 22nd, earning 29 fantasy points as a result. His salary is also very inexpensive, which allows you to place other dominators into your roster.

Though the No. 38 Front Row Motorsports wheelman doesn't have experience in a Cup car at Homestead, he does have some in Xfinity. He finished fourth and 11th in last year's doubleheader while competing for RCR. Also, Alfredo ended 10th at Atlanta after starting 24th.

The rookie will begin in 27th and could meet his DraftKings value if he gets at least a top 20.

Weekend Preview: Daytona Road Course

McDowell, Elliot are optimistic about this weekend at the Daytona Road Course

Michael McDowell always goes into a NASCAR Cup Series road course event feeling confident and prepared to win. For the first time in his career – he’ll bring a huge trophy with him.

McDowell earned his first NASCAR cup Series career victory in the Daytona 500 last weekend and the road course specialist arrives for Sunday’s O’Reilly Auto Parts 253 (3 p.m. ET on FOX, MRN and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio) on the Daytona International Speedway road course absolutely ready to make it two-in-a-row.

Should he pull off the back-to-back wins, McDowell would be only the sixth driver in history to win the season’s opening two races. The last to do so was Matt Kenseth in 2009. But McDowell has good reason to be optimistic. He is a former IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Series road course race winner and has a best finish of third in seven Rolex 24 races on the Daytona road course.

“We feel really optimistic and confident," said McDowell, who finished 10th in the No. 34 Front Row Motorsports Ford at the Daytona Road Course last summer.

“We had a top-five car most of the day last year. [Crew chief] Drew [Blickensderfer] and I went for it near the end with taking tires, but we didn’t get a late race caution so the strategy didn’t work like we wanted."

McDowell acknowledged he and his team carry high expectations into this road course weekend.

“Even without the Daytona 500 win, we would still feel confident coming back this weekend. We have really worked hard on our road course program this offseason and we are getting better. It’s another good opportunity for us."

Of course, McDowell will have to beat the same driver he edged in the Daytona 500. Reigning NASCAR Cup Series driver Chase Elliott has won the last four series road courses dating back to 2019. Five of Elliott’s 11 career series wins have come on road course venues, including the 2020 race on the 3.61-mile, 14-turn Daytona Road Course.

Elliott’s 8.92 career average finish on road courses in the No. 9 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet is best among active drivers. His crew chief Alan Gustafson, a Daytona Beach native, is the winningest active crew chief on road courses with five wins.

Last summer, Elliott held off Denny Hamlin by .202-seconds to earn the series’ inaugural race victory on the Daytona course – leading a race best 34 of the 65 laps. McDowell finished 10th what was a mixed weather afternoon of competition featuring 13 lead changes among six drivers.

Elliott won both road courses last season (at Daytona and at Charlotte) and was leading on the Daytona infield in the non-points Busch Clash event a week before contact with Ryan Blaney on the final turn of the final lap. He recovered to finish second.

“Road courses have been good to us the past few trips, but that doesn’t mean it’s going to go good every time," Elliott said. “There has not been one part of me that watched the schedule change, saw seven road courses and thought, ‘yeah, we’ve got it now.’ That’s just not how I am. At the end of the day, you have to be good everywhere and I want to be good everywhere. We as a team want to get to the point where we can win on any given week; road course, circle track, intermediate, dirt. .. whatever it is, we want to be able to win at any time. The great teams and the great drivers are capable of doing that and I think we are capable of doing that. So that’s where my head’s at – trying to be good everywhere."

Elliott and McDowell will start on the front row Sunday, just ahead of Austin Dillon, who leads the NASCAR Cup Series championship standings for the first time in his career. He finished just behind McDowell and Elliot in the Daytona 500. With two top-five finishes in the race’s opening stages plus his third-place at the checkered, Dillon holds a six-point advantage over Denny Hamlin in the championship standings.

XFINITY CHAMP AUSTIN CINDRIC LOOKS TOUGH TO BEAT

Austin Cindric picked up right where he left off in 2020 – out front and hoisting a trophy. The 2020 NASCAR Xfinity Series champion won the season-opener at the Daytona International Speedway in an overtime thriller last Saturday and is absolutely a favorite to win again when the series returns to the track’s 3.61-mile road course on Saturday for the Super Start Batteries 188 at Daytona Presented by O’Reilly (5 p.m. ET on FS1, MRN and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio).

Cindric has proven to be the reigning road course master of the series – winning four times on four different circuits (Watkins Glen, Mid-Ohio, Road America and Daytona RC). He is the defending Daytona Road Course winner leading 21 of 52 laps there last August.

Not only does the 22-year-old return to Florida this week as defending Xfinity Series race winner, he is coming off a stellar NASCAR Cup Series debut last weekend too - starting 39th and finishing 15th in his very first Daytona 500.

With his win in the Xfinity Series opener last Saturday, Cindric said he’s checked an important box.

“One of my extracurricular goals for the year was to win on a superspeedway," Cindric said. “To get that knocked out early was really satisfying. It is a different discipline. To be able to control the race, how we did and the speed in our car, I was really proud of that effort. We haven’t had that kind of speed at speedways in the past. It shows the effort my guys have put in during the off-season. We keep stepping up both individually and as a group. Nothing is guaranteed though, so it is back to work.”

He will have plenty of legitimate competition in this weekend’s field. Veteran A.J. Allmendinger, a former IndyCar racer, is always a favorite on road courses. He won at the Charlotte ROVAL last year and is now competing fulltime in the series driving the No. 16 Kaulig Racing Chevrolet.

Other road course “ringers” include former NASCAR Cup Series Rookie of the Year and IMSA winner Andy Lally, who finished fifth at the Daytona road course in 2020. Road course stars Miguel Paludo and Preston Pardus are also entered.

The starting lineup for Saturday’s race includes a front row of Brett Moffitt – a NASCAR Camping World Truck Series road course winner – and Austin Cindric.

CAMPING WORLD TRUCKS GO ROAD RACING

A typically action-packed season-opening NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race on the Daytona International Speedway oval last week takes a new turn – 14 turns actually – when the series races on the 3.61-mile infield road course in Friday night’s BrakeBest Select 159 at DAYTONA (7:30 p.m. ET on FS1, MRN and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio).

Reigning series champion Sheldon Creed won the Daytona Road Course event last year taking a comfortable .743-second win over veteran Brett Moffitt – the two drivers leading 32 of the 46 laps with Creed leading the last 12. Raphael Lessard, Matt Crafton and Austin Hill rounded out the top five.

It was the only road course race of the 2020 COVID-affected schedule. Typically, the series races at Canadian Tire Motorsports Park in Bowmanville, Ontario. Among those full-time drivers entered this weekend only John Hunter Nemechek (2016) and Moffitt (2019) have recent road course wins there.

Ben Rhodes, a championship contender in 2020, earned the season-opening win at Daytona last weekend edging Jordan Anderson by .036-seconds. Chandler Smith led the most laps. Rhodes holds a slim four-point edge on the defending champ Creed and Nemechek coming into this weekend’s race.

Hailie Deegan, driver of the No. 1 Team DGR Ford F-150, will be making only her second start in the series as a fulltime championship contender. She ran briefly among the top five last weekend on the Daytona superspeedway but was caught in a crash and finished 24th.

Deegan, who was encouraged with her work Sunday, told the media this week she’s really benefitted from having former NASCAR Cup Series driver David Ragan as a “tutor” or sorts for the 2021 season.

“He has been crucial for my development," Deegan said. “Just the level of experience he has and all the knowledge he has that he has been able to feed to me has been so great.”

“Ford saw how much he was helping me and the information he was giving me. I think going into the Truck Series this year, Ford stuck him with me with the mindset of working together and doing the best we can together.”

Deegan said the former NASCAR Cup Series winner has been able to help the learning curve with all the new tracks she’s encountering. She does have some experience on the Daytona Road Course, finishing seventh in an ARCA Menard Series race there last year.

“His experience and knowledge," Deegan said. “Everything he knows about every single track. I think going to all these tracks, I am very new to them. A lot of them I haven’t raced at before. Him having experience there and a lot of notes that he can give me is crucial.”

Ben Rhodes will start from the pole this weekend and Ryan Truex, who finished fourth in last week’s season-opener, will start on the outside front row for Friday’s race.

The theme of the 2021 NASCAR Cup Series season is new heading into the Daytona 500: new drivers, new teams, new schedule, new numbers. We also have a new writer, Frontstretch.com's Zach Sturniolo, to preview the latest installment of the "Great American Race."

Thankfully, in the midst of major change in NASCAR, one thing remains the same: the action returns Sunday with the 63rd annual Daytona 500.

The always-short offseason felt as if it dragged through the winter. Until this week's exhibition Busch Clash, NASCAR hasn't been on track since November. Now, NASCAR has a new champion in the form of Chase Elliott; new teams in 23XI Racing — co-owned by yes, that Michael Jordan — and Trackhouse Racing — co-owned by, wait really? Yes, Pitbull; and a schedule featuring seven road courses, four of which have never hosted a Cup race previously.

It will take some time to determine how good any of those additions will be to the sport. What we know now? The excitement around the sport is reaching a fever pitch as the 2021 season opener draws nearer.

Racing throughout Speedweeks has been exceptional. The Clash ran on the Daytona International Speedway road course for the first time Tuesday and put on a thrilling show that ended with a last-lap battle, crash and pass for the win. Thursday night featured a thrilling pair of Bluegreen Vacations Duels, the qualifying races that officially set the starting lineup for Sunday's race.

Alex Bowman and William Byron stormed to the front row of the Daytona 500 in single-car qualifying on Wednesday night, but both of their Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolets suffered issues in their respective qualifying races. Bowman's motor malfunctioned multiple times, and Byron was collected in a multi-car crash late in his duel. Bowman's No. 48 team has decided to wait until Saturday's practice sessions to determine whether to change engines, which would relegate the Ally Chevrolet to the rear of the starting grid on Sunday. Byron will have no choice but to give up his starting spot, as the No. 24 team had to roll out a backup car.

Also coming from the rear in backup cars will be 2012 Cup champion Brad Keselowski, rookie Chase Briscoe, 2020 Rookie of the Year Cole Custer, Daytona 500 rookie Kaz Grala, and Chip Ganassi's newest driver Ross Chastain.

Grala was one of eight open cars vying for the final four spots available for the Great American Race. He, Ryan Preece, David Ragan and Austin Cindric locked their way into the big show, while Noah Gragson, Garrett Smithley, Timmy Hill and Ty Dillon were sent packing.

63rd Daytona 500

Date: Sunday, Feb. 14

Time: 2:30 p.m. ET

Track: Daytona International Speedway (Daytona Beach, Fla.)

TV: FOX

Radio: MRN, SIRIUS XM Channel 90

Who's at the Front: Bubba Wallace

Remember that new team, 23XI Racing, I mentioned earlier? The one co-owned by Michael Jordan? Their other co-owner is three-time Daytona 500 winner Denny Hamlin, who rolls off the starting grid 25th Sunday in search of an unprecedented third consecutive 500 triumph.

The story, though, is the team's new driver, Bubba Wallace, who enters the seat after three seasons with Richard Petty Motorsports.

Wallace was fastest in Wednesday's lone practice session, in which he drafted with his Toyota allies from Joe Gibbs Racing, including team co-owner Hamlin. Practice at superspeedways rarely holds any significance, and that is still likely the case.

The DoorDash No. 23 Toyota, however, looked extremely sporty in Thursday night's duel, dicing through traffic, leading three laps and maneuvering through the field from back to front multiple times. Wallace stormed to the lead past Martin Truex Jr. entering Turn 3 on the final lap of his duel but got too much an advantage exiting Turn 4, allowing Austin Dillon to chase down Wallace, cut from top to bottom and steal the victory.

"A good debut, but nothing to be really happy about for myself," Wallace said. "It's okay for drivers to be hard on themselves. That's how we motivate ourselves to go out and do better. Hats off to my guys — the 23XI team — for building me a great DoorDash Toyota Camry. I tried to do all I could to help (Martin) Truex there, get Toyota a win. I appreciate Kyle (Busch) for cutting me a lot of breaks. I know I've got a lot to learn here, but all in all, it was a good night, but I've got some learning to do."

Wallace's performance showed that not only does his car have speed, but it handles well and the driver knows how to wheel it in traffic. If Wallace can replicate that speed and balance it with patience on Sunday, Wallace has a legitimate chance to earn his first victory in the NASCAR Cup Series on the sport's biggest stage.

Who's at the Back: Denny Hamlin

Speaking of Hamlin, he'll have his work cut out for him on Sunday as he chases history.

The No. 11 FedEx Toyota ran out of fuel on the final lap of its duel, relegating Hamlin to a 13th-place finish in Duel No. 1 and a 25th-place starting spot on Sunday's grid.

As with most superspeedway races, where you start the race doesn't really matter. The pack is sure to be three-wide within the first two laps, and drivers often either choose to find their ways up through the field or lag behind to avoid getting caught in the mass calamity known as the Big One.

Hamlin tends to follow the strategy of the former, eager to get out front and lead laps. No one recently has had more success on superspeedways than Hamlin. In his last six combined starts at Daytona and Talladega Superspeedway, Hamlin has only finished outside the top four once, a 26th-place finish in the summer race at Daytona in 2018. To be so strong at tracks where racing is dangerously unpredictable is an incredible feat, but he will have his work cut out for him Sunday afternoon.

News Briefs

NASCAR president Steve Phelps fielded questions from media members on Friday afternoon ahead of Sunday's season opener, touching on a number of topics like fan reaction to social stances as well as thoughts on the charter system.

Over at Joe Gibbs Racing, Martin Truex Jr. signed a contract extension on Wednesday, linking him to the No. 19 car through at least 2022 as terms of the deal were not released.

Gray Gaulding also is jumping back into full-time Xfinity Series racing this year with Jimmy Means Racing, driving the team's No. 52 car with funding help from Panini America.

NASCAR by the Numbers

20

This year marks 20 years since NASCAR was changed forever when Dale Earnhardt Sr. was killed in a crash on the final lap of the 2001 Daytona 500.

Safety and innovation have remained at the forefront of stock-car racing ever since that tragic February Sunday. Because of the changes made, such as making HANS devices mandatory, SAFER barriers covering what were previously concrete walls, and sturdier yet more forgiving cars, countless drivers' lives have been saved, among those Ryan Newman, Michael McDowell and Austin Dillon.

Playing the Odds (Fantasy Spin)

Top Tier

Superspeedway races are always the most difficult races to select fantasy drivers. The threat of the looming multi-car crash known as the "Big One" is bound to take out anyone at any time.

That said, streaks still exist — and Denny Hamlin's hot streak at superspeedways is way too hot to ignore. At Daytona alone, Hamlin has garnered four top-three finishes in the past six races, including wins in each of the last two Daytona 500s.

Ryan Blaney should also be on your radar. Blaney has two wins at Talladega Superspeedway in the past two years and is a constant threat to win the Daytona 500. Blaney finished runner-up to Hamlin one year ago and led 113 laps in the 2018 edition of the season opener.

Middle Tier

Despite his terrifying, death-defying crash in this race 12 months ago, Ryan Newman has been exceptional at superspeedways over the past two seasons. Newman led entering the tri-oval last year as the checkered flag flew, just before contact from Blaney sent Newman spinning, crashing and flipping down the Daytona frontstretch.

In his last seven Daytona starts, Newman has two fifth-place finishes and three other top 10s. He's been racing these tracks since 2002 and seems to only be getting better with age.

Matt DiBenedetto is another driver to consider here. He's still looking for his first career victory, but has had some solid runs in the Daytona 500, perhaps most memorably in the 2019 Daytona 500 when he was caught up in the Big One after leading a race-high 49 laps that day.

Lower Tier

This is the perfect time to consider a one-off driver, in this case David Ragan.

Ragan retired from full-time Cup competition following the 2019 season but returned for the 2020 Daytona 500 and earned a fourth-place finish. Ragan's best career runs have come on the massive superspeedways, earning wins at Daytona (2008) and Talladega (2013).

Watch out as well for debut driver Austin Cindric. The 2020 Xfinity Series champion locked his way into the Daytona 500 for his Cup Series debut and is driving for powerhouse Team Penske. His Penske teammates — Blaney, Brad Keselowski and Joey Logano — are three of the best superspeedway drivers in the field. Couple that with the strong organization Ford deploys in the draft, and Cindric may be a nice dark horse pick.

What Vegas Thinks

All that talk of Denny Hamlin earlier means you should be surprised that Vegas believes he's the favorite entering Sunday afternoon. The driver of the No. 11 car is listed at 8/1 odds, while Chase Elliott, the defending series champion, is one of three drivers listed at 10/1 odds. The other drivers at 10/1? Joey Logano and Ryan Blaney.
