Years before this weekend's Food City Dirt Race, NASCAR racing on dirt tracks was the rule, not the exception. Seven of eight events in the sport's inaugural Cup Series season of 1949 were held on this track type. By the mid-1950s, that number rose to 40 and over a dozen dirt track events were on the schedule as late as 1967.

But as the sport came into its own, original NASCAR President Bill France Sr. foresaw larger oval tracks as the next step to grow his series. So, on Sept. 30, 1970, when Richard Petty bested a small field of 23 drivers to win the Home State 200 at the North Carolina State Fairgrounds, it was the last of just three dirt track events held that season.

It would also be the final time in more than 50 years NASCAR's top series would compete on that track type. By 1972, a schedule of 48 races across the southeast was cut by 35 percent as the sport refocused on newer asphalt facilities like Talladega Superspeedway, Michigan International Speedway, and Dover International Speedway to take the sport national.

That decades-long drought hopefully will end on Monday following the postponement of Sunday's scheduled race due to torrential rains in the Bristol, Tennessee, area when Bristol Motor Speedway ushers in the sport's return to dirt with an incredible three-month transformation. Over 2,300 truckloads of the brown stuff were brought in, weighing almost 30,000 tons to turn this .533-mile oval into the sport's great big experiment of 2021. Rather than take their top series to an established dirt track, NASCAR's chosen to muddy the waters, holding a 250-lap event at a premier remodeled venue paired with sky-high expectations and one that is having to battle Mother Nature as well.

Can this untested race match the hype? Many in the 39-driver field have limited to no experience competing this way, some utilizing a series of Late Model events called the Bristol Dirt Nationals as their testing ground last week. In fact, a few owners at the back of the grid are resorting to "dirt ringers" like Camping World Truck Series regular Stewart Friesen, reigning USAC Midget champion Chris Windom, and 2018 World of Outlaws champion Mike Marlar.

Up front, all eyes will be on Kyle Larson, off to a fast start already with his new No. 5 ride at Hendrick Motorsports. Larson spent most of 2020 running circles around inferior dirt competition after that racial slur heard around the racing world left him without a Cup ride. The two-time defending Chili Bowl Nationals winner enters as a heavy favorite to cash in here despite needing to start from the rear after a Friday engine change.

But that's no guarantee as a bigger question surrounds how much green-flag racing we'll actually get. Concerns about tires marked Friday practice sessions filled with a few spins and broken fenders from diving too low on the apron. While heat races loom on Saturday to set the starting lineup, an opportunity for additional practice, Goodyear can't exactly fix their compound midstream. Can the rubber meet the road when it comes to a raceable track surface?

It all adds up to a true wild card race in which we could see a seventh different winner in as many events. So much for March coming in like a lion and out like a lamb, right? NASCAR's 2021 schedule filled with unpredictability leaves us with little if any idea of what to expect.

Only one way to find out: tune in. Boom or bust, this weekend will easily become one of the sport's most memorable of the next several years.

Food City Dirt Race

Date: Monday, March 29 (postponed from Sunday, March 28 due to weather)

Time: 4 p.m. ET

Track: Bristol Motor Speedway (Bristol, Tenn.)

TV: FOX

Radio: PRN, SIRIUS XM Channel 90

Starting Lineup for Food City Dirt Race

Who's at the Front: Ryan Blaney

Blaney bolted to the front in the closing laps at Atlanta Motor Speedway after a dominant Kyle Larson wore out his tires. Twenty years after his dad, Dave, led 70 laps here before a flat tire foiled his chances, the son took the trophy home for the family in extending his streak of at least one Cup win per season to five years.

Here's the problem for Blaney; he's always stopped at one. To be taken seriously at a title contender, that win total needs to tick up to two or more by the time the playoffs hit come September.

Who's at the Back: Kurt Busch

Busch was an innocent victim in a midrace Atlanta crash caused when younger brother Kyle spun his tires on a restart. Still, that disappointing 39th-place result was the fifth time in six races this season the 2004 Cup champion's finished worse than he started. Slipping to 15th in the standings with just three laps led, Chip Ganassi Racing's best entry seems a cylinder or two behind four-car Hendrick Motorsports at Chevrolet. Will that gulf in performance be too wide for Busch to overcome in what could potentially be his final full-time season at age 42?

News Briefs

NASCAR chose not to penalize drivers Daniel Hemric and Noah Gragson after an Xfinity Series post-race scuffle at Atlanta Motor Speedway. The drivers came to blows after Hemric was upset over Gragson backing into his No. 18 Toyota during a mid-race pit stop sequence. Gragson claimed the contact was unintentional but it's not the first time this season he's run into trouble. Earlier this month, he caused controversy by criticizing David Starr after the driver unintentionally blew a tire in front of him and cost Gragson a victory at Homestead-Miami Speedway.

William Byron won the sport's midweek Bristol Dirt warmup, an eNASCAR Pro Invitational Series race held entirely online. Byron reprised his role as the iRacing favorite among Cup competitors, winning three of the seven events held during the two-month 2020 suspension due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This race was filled with off-track news, too, as another 2020 eNASCAR Pro Invitational Series winner, Timmy Hill, was initially left out of the field until Roger Penske offered him a virtual ride at the last minute.

NASCAR is teaming up with the White House in a bid to encourage COVID-19 vaccinations across the country. The sport joins its stick-and-ball counterparts like Major League Baseball and the NFL in joining an ad campaign designed to convince skeptics the doses are safe and effective. So far this season, one Camping World Truck Series driver, Kris Wright, has tested positive for the virus.

NASCAR by the Numbers

1,659

Cup races since the last dirt event at the Cup level (1970).

7

Dirt races at Eldora Speedway held at the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series level since 2013, the only recent competition on this track type in the sport's top three divisions. The Trucks are racing at Bristol Saturday and will have a second dirt event in Knoxville, Tennessee, later in 2021.

Playing the Odds (Fantasy Spin)

Top Tier

It's hard to ignore Kyle Larson and the years of success he's had in all forms of dirt racing. He also comes into this event with back-to-back top-2 finishes, a series-high 379 laps led, and a track record of paved Bristol success (two runner-up results in his last four starts). The price is high for a reason; Larson could whoop the field here and no one would so much as bat an eyebrow. And starting from the rear? I wouldn't worry about it, especially when it comes with a truckload of position differential points.

Denny Hamlin surprised some by placing inside the top 5 during Friday's practice sessions. Hamlin is one of the sport's short track specialists and could surprise here; the last of his two Bristol wins on the paved track came recently (2019). Hamlin, who has five top-five finishes in six races this season, has also mastered the art of stage points, bonuses that could provide extra value for your roster.

Middle Tier

Christopher Bell has a NASCAR dirt track win on his resume already, earning the top spot at Eldora Speedway's Truck Series event back in 2015. The three-time Chili Bowl Nationals winner (2017-19) is also a former USAC Midget champion and has an extensive dirt racing background. Add in the strong start to 2021 (see: Daytona road course victory) and you have a recipe for success.

Here's a fact people forget: Austin Dillon won the first-ever Truck race at Eldora Speedway in 2013. While not known as a short track expert, Dillon could surprise with a Richard Childress Racing team building momentum after a strong sixth-place finish at Atlanta last Sunday.

Lower Tier

Rookie Chase Briscoe has stumbled out of the gate at the Cup level with Stewart-Haas Racing. But his dirt background includes an Eldora Speedway victory at the Truck level (2018) and car owner Tony Stewart lives for this track type. Don't be surprised if Briscoe gets it together for a strong top-5 performance at Bristol.

2019 Eldora winner and Truck Series veteran Stewart Friesen is making his Cup debut with Spire Motorsports. If there's a dirt ringer that can make the most with inferior equipment, it'll be this Canadian star used to NASCAR equipment. Keep in mind simply surviving the expected carnage on Monday will deliver a top-15 finish for a driver whose salary is inexpensive in almost all types of fantasy formats.

What Vegas Thinks

As expected, Kyle Larson is trending as a heavy Bristol Dirt Race favorite with 5/2 odds according to vegasinsider.com. Christopher Bell is next with 11/2 odds while Chase Briscoe and Austin Dillon sit at 9/1.

Plenty of good longshots out there. William Byron is sitting at 66/1 despite winning Wednesday on the online version of this track.

March Madness reigns supreme in the background of the Folds of Honor QuikTrip 500 at Atlanta Motor Speedway (Sunday, 3:30 p.m. ET, FOX). But while college basketball Cinderellas take center stage in Indianapolis, NASCAR's top seeds should establish themselves up front at this 1.54-mile quad oval.

It's a prime opportunity for these favorites to step up. Only five drivers won two Cup Series races or more last season, the lowest total since 1998: Kevin Harvick, Denny Hamlin, Joey Logano, Brad Keselowski and 2020 NASCAR Cup champion Chase Elliott. None of them have won thus far in 2021, a mild surprise although all of them are solidly in playoff position.

Atlanta could very well change that, a track where Harvick in particular has starred in recent years. The Stewart-Haas Racing Ford veteran has led 100-plus laps in seven of the last nine races, including last June with a drive that ended in victory lane. It's a facility that catapulted Harvick's career 20 years ago, taking Dale Earnhardt's former ride to the win just one month after his death in the 2001 Daytona 500.

Hamlin also has been victorious here, in 2012, and showcased speed in the form of three stage wins this season. Keselowski has won twice here in the last four years, adding 97 laps led in the No. 2 Team Penske Ford. They're currently 1-2 in the series standings and building their resumes for the Championship 4 come November.

Elliott, the sport's Most Popular Driver, is the hometown favorite and led 26 laps from the pole last June. Finally, there's Logano, 0-for-14 all-time here but with 33 laps led in his last three AMS starts.

This quintet looks to get off the schneid at a track whose aging asphalt favors veterans like them capable of preserving tires. Long green-flag runs, especially in the final stage, provide an opportunity for drivers to make moves in the low-horsepower package with a wide track that's got plenty of room to race.

When the competition's close, side-by-side action has provided a number of nail-biting finishes: in a five-year span from 2001-05, three races were decided by .03 seconds or less. But as Atlanta's asphalt has faded, clean air has gained added importance and maintaining contact with the front is crucial after restarts.

Can the big names maintain track position and slug out an Atlanta victory among themselves? Or will a Cinderella somehow find a way to sneak through?

Folds of Honor QuikTrip 500

Date: Sunday, March 21

Time: 3 p.m. ET

Track: Atlanta Motor Speedway (Hampton, Ga.)

TV: FOX

Radio: PRN, SIRIUS XM Channel 90

Starting Lineup for Sunday's Folds of Honor QuikTrip 500 at Atlanta Motor Speedway

Who's at the Front: Joe Gibbs Racing

Let's start with Martin Truex Jr., who earned just his second victory with second-year crew chief James Small after sneaking by Logano during a late restart at Phoenix. It broke his 0-for-30 slump at the track, punching a playoff ticket for a hopeful return trip to the Championship 4 come November.

But Truex isn't alone up front. Hamlin is the point leader by some 39 markers already while Christopher Bell clinched a postseason spot of his own with a win at the Daytona International Speedway road course. When two-time Cup champ Kyle Busch is sitting fourth on the depth chart, "only" 15th in points you know your team is hitting on all cylinders.

Who's at the Back: Cole Custer

The dreaded sophomore slump has come for the 2020 Cup Series Rookie of the Year. An 11th in the season-opening Daytona 500 has been followed by runs of 13th, 23rd, 25th and 31st at Phoenix Raceway last weekend. Bad luck has snakebit the team, peaking in the form of Bubba Wallace's front bumper while battling for a top-15 result in Sunday's closing laps.

News Briefs

Could another NBA player be making his way into NASCAR ownership? A report surfaced this week four-time NBA Most Valuable Player LeBron James is a new partner at Fenway Sports Group. The owners of Major League Baseball's Boston Red Sox, among other sports franchises, also happen to be investors in two-car Roush Fenway Racing (Ryan Newman and Chris Buescher). Will James follow Michael Jordan's lead into stock car competition?

Daniel Suarez and Brad Keselowski will have replacement crew chiefs this weekend after both were busted for missing lug nuts in post-race inspection from Phoenix Raceway. Jose Blanco will take the reins for Suarez over at Trackhouse Racing while engineer Grant Hutchens mans the pit box for Keselowski.

A NASCAR Camping World Truck Series driver has tested positive for COVID-19. 26-year-old rookie Kris Wright, running full-time for Young's Motorsports, will miss the race this weekend and be replaced by Josh Berry. It's the first positive COVID test for any NASCAR racer in the sport's top three divisions this season.

NASCAR by the Numbers

22

Lead changes last Sunday at Phoenix, the most for a Cup Series race at the track since 2013.

3

Drivers to complete every lap of the season's first five races: Denny Hamlin, Kyle Larson and Chase Elliott.

Playing the Odds (Fantasy Spin)

Top Tier

Kevin Harvick will have the highest salary for most daily fantasy formats considering his past history here. Doesn't matter. The man has led such large chunks of races here the past seven years with Stewart-Haas Racing it's hard to see that trend changing in 2021. You can't miss out on the bonus points up front even if it squeezes your roster down the line.

Denny Hamlin, by virtue of sitting on the pole, is your other best bet in this tier. Position differential means he can only go backward but three stage wins show how the No. 11 team has speed at all points in the race. Those 10, sometimes 20-point bonuses for victories help cushion the blow if Hamlin fades late.

Middle Tier

Kurt Busch has quietly established a successful Atlanta resume during his time at Roush Fenway Racing, Team Penske and now Chip Ganassi Racing. The 2004 Cup champion has five straight top-10 finishes while leading a healthy 116 laps during that stretch. The last time Busch finished outside the top 15 here was 2009 and I wouldn't expect that to change this Sunday.

Austin Dillon now has three top-15 Atlanta finishes in his last five starts here for Richard Childress Racing. It's part of RCR's increasing speed on the intermediate tracks, a trend that bodes well for a driver on the upswing since the fall of 2020.

Lower Tier

Ryan Newman hasn't found his groove since returning from near tragedy in the 2020 Daytona 500. The last time he scored a top-5 finish was way back in 2019. But Atlanta is a place he's had a history of success, sneaking in back-to-back top-15 runs with current employer Roush Fenway Racing. Add in a cheap salary and Newman's a great backfill for your roster.

Daniel Suarez continues to impress with Pitbull's new team over at Trackhouse Racing (three races led the last four weeks). Two top-15 runs in four career AMS starts provides hope he can replicate that performance with a single-car organization who's overachieving thus far in 2021.

Las Vegas is the town of Cinderella stories born at midnight, a place where one roll of the dice turns the moneyless into millionaires. It's the type of rags-to-riches story that's defined NASCAR's 2021 season, Michael McDowell's Daytona 500 triumph sparking three straight first-time winners heading into this year's Pennzoil 400.

But Sin City could play a very different role when the green flag falls Sunday (3:30 p.m. ET on FOX). For the sport's big names, this cookie-cutter 1.5-mile oval offers a likely return to favorites running up front. In 26 Cup races held at Las Vegas Motor Speedway since 1998, just seven organizations have won here. It's a Who's Who of NASCAR heavyweights on the list: Hendrick Motorsports (five wins), Team Penske (five), Stewart-Haas Racing (four), and Joe Gibbs Racing (two) have swapped around victory lane as of late.

The pattern changed slightly last fall, when Kurt Busch of Chip Ganassi Racing pulled out a minor upset at his hometown track. But CGR is hardly a lightweight; Busch wound up in last year's postseason Round of 8. We've yet to see a major underdog ever break through as even the lone single-car team to win, Furniture Row Racing with Martin Truex Jr., captured the Cup title that same year (2017).

Those heavyweights could use a healthy dose of time up front. The biggest surprise in the first three weeks has been the list of people who haven't led a single lap. Among them: Ryan Blaney, Kyle Busch and Aric Almirola. Kevin Harvick, despite posting three top-10 finishes, has led only 17 circuits after winning nine races last year in a dominant performance.

Vegas offers them an opportunity to right the ship. It's a track conducive to long green-flag runs and track position, both trends that benefit the bigwigs with the best handling package under the 550-horsepower setup. Even Matt DiBenedetto, who has the worst start of the 2020 playoff drivers, could rebound quickly after a pair of second-place finishes at this track last year.

Of course, the man everyone is always keeping an eye on is the sport's Most Popular Driver, Chase Elliott. Runner-up at the Daytona 500, the reigning NASCAR champion saw a win slip away on that track's road course before a fairly invisible run at Homestead-Miami Speedway (14th). Is this where he plays a poker hand that showcases newfound strength for Hendrick on intermediates? William Byron, last week's winner, shows their speed at this track type is steadily improving.

We'll see who masters those hurdles and pulls the right slot machine in Sin City. Chances are, it's a driver who becomes a strong championship contender when the series comes back around here this fall.

Pennzoil 400

Date: Sunday, March 7

Time: 3:30 p.m. ET

Track: Las Vegas Motor Speedway

TV: FOX

Radio: MRN, SIRIUS XM Channel 90

Starting Lineup for Sunday's Pennzoil 400 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway

Who's at the Front: William Byron

It took this 22-year-old nearly 60 races with seven-time Cup championship crew chief Chad Knaus at the helm to win.

With old NASCAR Camping World Truck Series head wrench Rudy Fugle taking over for 2021? It took just three weeks.

Byron took charge during the second half of the race at Homestead-Miami Speedway, leading a career-high 102 laps while nearly equaling his total for the entire 2020 season. The performance raised eyebrows and showed the importance of chemistry between a driver and his pit road head coach.

"We really think the same way," Byron said after Sunday's win, "and it helps us in a lot of ways to progress through races, communicate well and work through the offseason."

Who's at the Back: Kyle Busch

What in the world is going on with the two-time Cup Series champ? New crew chief Ben Beshore was supposed to stop the bleeding of a No. 18 Toyota team that struggled throughout 2020. Instead, Busch has just one top-10 finish, a big zero in the laps led column, and a position differential of -11. The only winner for Joe Gibbs Racing thus far is in the NASCAR Xfinity Series (18-year-old teenager Ty Gibbs).

News Briefs

The Nashville Fairgrounds track is one step closer to a potential return to the NASCAR Cup Series schedule. The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County joined with Bristol Motor Speedway this week to issue a letter of intent to restore the iconic short track. If approved, Bristol will manage a restoration effort designed for NASCAR to bring its top-tier series back for competition. It’s been a while; the Cup Series last ran a race at the Fairgrounds during the 1984 season.

Chris Buescher claimed his first tenure at Roush Fenway Racing was defined by teamwork that "wasn’t as good" as it is now. The driver of the No. 17 Ford, who nearly pulled off an upset win last Sunday at Homestead, led a career-high 57 laps and is the "most relaxed [he's] been in a race car in a really long time."

Dale Earnhardt Jr. will hit memory lane this May at Darlington Raceway by piloting his father's old 1980s NASCAR Xfinity Series car. He'll pace the field with the No. 8 his father, Hall of Famer Dale Earnhardt, drove in the second-tier division as Darlington continues its recent trend of connecting with NASCAR's past.

NASCAR by the Numbers

2

Drivers to start the year with three straight top-10 finishes: Kevin Harvick and Michael McDowell.

103

Laps led by Denny Hamlin through three races, the most of any Cup driver despite failing to reach victory lane. Hamlin leads the early point standings by 20 over Harvick.

Playing the Odds (Fantasy Spin)

Top Tier

Joe Gibbs Racing appears well positioned to break their winless streak to start 2021. Martin Truex Jr. is a former Las Vegas winner, was fourth in the fall and has six top-10 finishes in his last seven starts. Denny Hamlin has never won here, lowering his salary a bit, but the point leader was third in the fall and led a race-high 121 laps. And hometown hero Kyle Busch has a little brotherly luck going on; after all, Kurt won the Vegas race here held last fall.

Not trusting JGR? How about Kevin Harvick? The 2018 March Vegas winner has 455 laps led her in his last six starts, five top-10 finishes and is itching to get back to his winning ways from 2020.

Las Vegas Motor Speedway Return: Fan favorite Spencer Boyd will make his fifth career NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS) start at Las Vegas (Nev.) Motor Speedway on Mar. 5, 2021.

In his previous four starts, Boyd earned a track-best 20th place finish in September 2019 and plans to roll the dice to improve on his 25th and 28th place finishes respectively from 2020.

Daytona Road Course Recap: In his road racing return in Trucks at Daytona, Boyd earned a disappointing 39th place finish in the BrakeBest Brake Pads 159 at the Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway Road Course.

While running solidly in the top-20, a mechanical issue sent Boyd’s No. 20 Credit MRI Chevrolet Silverado to the garage and done for the night, just 13 laps shy of the checkered flag.

Fix Now, Pay Later: This weekend at Daytona, Boyd’s No. 20 Young’s Motorsports Chevrolet Silverado will adorn the primary colors of Credit MRI.

For more than a decade Credit MRI has delivered professional credit repair services with its industry-first and only 30 DAY NO FEE GUARANTEE. Simply put if they do not deliver results then you pay nothing.

Chasing That W: Boyd is eyeing his second career NASCAR Camping World Truck Series victory for himself and Young’s Motorsports.

In 2019 at Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway, Boyd pulled an upset during the Truck Series Playoffs by winning the Sugarland Shines 250 at the 2.66-mile superspeedway edging Todd Gilliland by 0.027 seconds.

Truck Series Rundown: In five years of Truck Series competition, Boyd has 49 career Truck Series starts with one win, two top-five and two top-10 finishes and a championship best of 17th in 2019.

Spencer Boyd Pre-Race Quotes:

On Las Vegas (Nev.) Motor Speedway: “Who doesn’t love Vegas!? Excited to roll the dice with No. 20 Credit MRI Chevrolet. First mile and a half of the year and excited to see our program in action.”

On Partnering With Credit MRI: “I used to sell cars back in my part-time NASCAR days. “I would see many hard-working people unable to get approved for a car because of simple strikes on their credit reports.

“Credit MRI is helping those folks, without charging them upfront, navigate the confusing path of credit recovery. Anything that helps hard-working Americans is high on my list!”
