The Coca-Cola 600 was once the ultimate NASCAR Cup Series test of man and machine. The sport's longest race (Sunday, 6 p.m. ET, FOX) would cause equipment breakdowns over the final 100 miles while driver stamina proved crucial in a race that often takes well over four hours to run.

But modern technology has taken the luster off Charlotte Motor Speedway's crown jewel event. Sunday's race is broken down into four 100-lap stages; that give drivers a break every 150 miles of competition. Shorter sprints keep the field bunched together and lead to finishes like 2020, in which 19 cars finished on the lead lap.

It's hard to market a race of survival when everyone, welp, winds up just fine at the end. Last year's race only featured one driver who fell out due to mechanical problems; not a single engine blew over the course of 600 miles. In fact, an event once known for attrition hasn't had a single DNF for engine failure since 2018.

The evolution of NASCAR has left this Charlotte oval behind, condensing a two-week celebration of the sport into a single weekend. Gone is the All-Star Race, shipped off to Texas Motor Speedway while the track's second date has been repurposed and rejuvenated... in the form of an infield road course.

Can the 600 be salvaged? It's still considered a crown jewel trophy, once part of a $1 million dollar bonus as one of the four most important races on the circuit. Races like last year help the cause in which no one driver outright dominated the event. Twice in the last five years, the winner has led a whopping 375 laps or more of this 400-lap race, making their win a foregone conclusion with two hours left to go in the race.

The hometown feel of Charlotte (most drivers and teams are based here) combined with past prestige still help to hype up this race in the garage area. The sport's biggest names often do well, with NASCAR champions Brad Keselowski and Chase Elliott each capturing a win in 2020.

Occasionally, though the quirkiness of this race can lead to a surprise breakthrough. Austin Dillon earned his first career victory on fuel mileage here in 2017. Casey Mears and David Reutimann are other recent surprises in the last 15 years of competition. Dillon led Friday practice here and has the experience necessary to pull an upset.

Whatever the result, NASCAR will be looking for fresh momentum surrounding a race that's been wilting against Sunday's major competition: the Indy 500. In the past, drivers have attempted both events, 1,100 miles of racing that brought some extra publicity to both sides. Perhaps with COVID-19 easing a bit and Roger Penske in control of INDYCAR there will be a push to bring those attempts back in 2022.

Who's at the Front: Chase Elliott

Elliott finally broke through a winless 2021 by prevailing at Circuit of Americas down in Austin, Texas. The No. 9 Chevrolet was out front when heavy downpours finally shortened a water-logged NASCAR debut on the 3.41-mile road course.

It's the fifth win for Elliott in the last six road course races and puts him back in the spotlight for a year he's slid under the radar (only 81 laps led overall). The reigning NASCAR champion, at times, had often seemed like the fourth fastest of four Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolets this season.

But when revealing my midseason awards this week, I was surprised to learn how many loop data categories Elliott heads up despite sitting fifth in the standings. He’s passed the most cars under green this season (1,592), produced the most quality passes (944) and has the highest pass differential (+172). With plenty more road courses on the schedule this season, expect the wins for Elliott (and the hype) to start piling back up.

Who's at the Back: Denny Hamlin

Say what? The NASCAR points leader? While Hamlin has a lead of nearly 100 points over his closest competition, the No. 11 has been struggling a bit in recent weeks. After going 8-for-9 in top-5 finishes to start the year, he’s earned just one in the past five races while producing a position differential of -21. Hamlin is now the only of 11 drivers within the sport's Big 3 organizations (Team Penske, Joe Gibbs Racing, Hendrick Motorsports) who hasn't won a race this year.

News Briefs

Chase Elliott's spotter, Eddie D'Hondt, has been suspended indefinitely by NASCAR after being charged with misdemeanor assault. The 62-year-old D'Hondt was arrested on May 12 based on an incident last fall with a woman at a jetski rental facility in North Carolina. Cousin Trey Poole will serve as Elliott's spotter on an interim basis.

Rumors continue to swirl around Brad Keselowski and his expected 2022 move to Roush Fenway Racing as part owner. Keselowski deflected questions this week when asked by reporters about his future, claiming he "can't talk about that, but I appreciate you asking." Current owner Roger Penske was also noncommittal about who would drive the No. 2 Ford next season, his flagship car. "We really haven't made a decision at this point," Penske said. "We've got a contract with Brad through the end of the year and we'll make a decision when that's over."

The reigning NASCAR Camping World Truck Series champion has finally picked up some consistent primary sponsorship. LiftKits4Less has signed on to back Sheldon Creed for 12 races as the Californian defends his title running for GMS Racing.

It's hard to ignore the success of Martin Truex Jr. at Charlotte. Three victories in the past eight races here include a dominant one in 2016 where he led 392 of 400 laps. With his current team at Joe Gibbs Racing, Truex has posted an average finish of 5.3 in three Charlotte starts, making him a shoo-in for a solid run.

It might be time to hop on the Chase Elliott train. A 2020 winner at this track, Elliott posted an average finish of 1.5 in two Charlotte starts last year while piling up 66 laps led. Since the fall of 2017, the driver of the No. 9 Chevrolet has finished no worse than 11th at CMS.

Middle Tier

It's not just a fast practice speed that's got me high on Austin Dillon this weekend. The Richard Childress Racing driver has put together the most consistent season of his career thus far. A season-long average finish of 13.5 is a career high and his five top-10 finishes include two on intermediate-type ovals similar to Charlotte. Add in that 2017 win, plus an eighth-place finish in 2020 and you've got a great mid-level addition to the roster.

Kurt Busch has only one career Charlotte victory, back in 2010, but has eight top-10 finishes at the track in his last 10 starts. Chip Ganassi Racing showed decent speed at COTA before Busch's late off-track excursion and could be poised to turn a disappointing season around.

Lower Tier

Corey LaJoie has two top-20 finishes at Charlotte in his last three oval races here, overachieving with a single-car, underfunded operation in Go Green Racing. A 20th-place effort last weekend at COTA was a season best outside of February's Daytona 500 and could provide momentum for Sunday.

Rookie Anthony Alfredo also had an impressive run Sunday for Front Row Motorsports, finishing 18th for just his second top-20 run of the season. Alfredo's organization has top-15 speed at Charlotte and ran decently last year with John Hunter Nemechek. It makes him a low-cost, medium-risk add to your roster that just might pay off.

What Vegas Thinks

Martin Truex Jr. has 4/1 odds to win, according to vegasinsider.com which leads the way in a betting field crowded with big names at the top. Chase Elliott is next with 11/2 odds, followed by Kyle Busch at 6/1. Denny Hamlin and Kyle Larson finish out the top-tier drivers with 17/2 odds.

The Alsco Uniforms 300 of the NASCAR Xfinity Series takes place on May 29th this year. Qualifying is back on Saturday morning and we’re tracking the full starting lineup for the Saturday afternoon race at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

FINAL UPDATE: Riley Herbst claimed the pole for Saturday’s Alsco Uniforms 300. Chase Briscoe will join him on the front row. They’ll be followed by Daniel Hemric and Austin Cindric on the second row.

NASCAR’s Xfinity Series is back on Saturday, racing at Charlotte Motor Speedway. The green flag drops on the 2021 Alsco Uniforms 300 at 1 p.m. ET and the race will air on FS1. However, before then, we get qualifying starting at 10:05 a.m.

NASCAR is limiting qualifying to eight tracks this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The starting lineup for most tracks is settled by a performance-metric formula. However, at Charlotte we get traditional qualifying. Given the length of the track, each driver gets one lap to put up their best speed. The fastest car claims the pole position and the slowest is in the last position. If a team has to change a car or make adjustments to the car, the driver drops to the back of the pack.

We’ll update qualifying results below until we have the starting lineup settled for Saturday’s 2021 Alsco Uniforms 300 race. Austin Cindric enters qualifying as the favorite at DraftKings Sportsbook, installed at +400. He’s followed by Ty Gibbs (+500), A.J. Allmendinger (+600), and Noah Gragson (+700).

NASCAR EchoPark Texas Grand Prix online free live streaming 2021 high quality(HD) broadcast on Sunday ,May 23, Track: Circuit of the Americas, Time: 2:30 p.m. ET. Watch NASCAR Cup Series Race At COTA free live stream online Race on any device .You can follow to Watch NASCAR Cup Series Race At COTA free live streaming from here details below.

The 2021 EchoPark Texas Grand Prix kicks off the second half of NASCAR's 26-race regular season. A year that got off to a crazy start, with two first-time winners in the first two weeks has calmed down just a bit. After 10 different winners in the first 11 races, Martin Truex Jr. has charged ahead of the field with three total victories. Three teams (Team Penske, Joe Gibbs Racing and Hendrick Motorsports) have won every race since the season-opening Daytona 500 while Denny Hamlin leads the points by a country mile.

That means the second half will be more of the same, right? A slow summer slog until NASCAR's postseason begins in September?

Not so fast.

This weekend's race at Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas, kicks off the wild and crazy part of the NASCAR season, where many of the 2021 schedule changes took place. It's stock car racing's debut at the track, an unpredictable weekend is one of a few virtually guaranteed unknowns over the next few months.

Consider the following about the rest of the Cup regular season...

Five of the last 13 races are on road courses, a NASCAR record for this stretch. The Cup Series has never raced on three of them (including COTA) and skipped the other two in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Nashville Superspeedway is a new oval race, a track no one has raced on in a decade.

Atlanta Motor Speedway has a second event, new on the schedule for 2021.

Daytona International Speedway, a pack race, concludes the sport's regular season in August.

That leaves just four tracks (Charlotte Motor Speedway, Pocono Raceway doubleheader, New Hampshire Motor Speedway, Michigan International Raceway) that are roughly the same as they were a year ago. Opportunities lie out there like low-hanging fruit for some underdogs to jump in and crash the Cup playoff party.

We start at COTA, where weather is a factor and could lead to rain tires being used. Cup held practice for the first time in three months, led by William Byron, before having a Sunday morning qualifying session before the race.

Among the surprising names inside the top 10 were Ross Chastain, driving for Chip Ganassi Racing, along with teammate Kurt Busch. Could a disappointing season from CGR be redeemed by slicing through Sunday's expected downpours?

The COTA track is new to the circuit, a 3.41-mile, 20-turn road course that's home to the Formula 1 U.S. Grand Prix. How stock cars will navigate the speedway, one of the more complex courses these drivers have ever run on, is a big unknown over the 68-lap event.

One top-tier driver who could benefit in the short-term is Chase Elliott, winner of four straight road course events until a little rain at Daytona derailed him in February. The 2020 Cup champion remains the only Hendrick driver who hasn't won this season; can he figure out the ins and outs of COTA before anyone else? Or will road-ringers like AJ Allmendinger surprise and steal a gargantuan upset?

Whatever happens, Sunday's sure worth watching as one of the unpredictable Cup races this year is on tap. COTA may just set a baseline for just how wild the second half of the regular season turns out.

Who's at the Front: Hendrick Motorsports

Hendrick posted the first 1-2-3-4 finish in its 37-year history with a dominant performance at Dover. Alex Bowman took the lead on pit stops, scooting ahead of Kyle Larson to win in a race where both men combined to lead 361 of 400 laps.

For Bowman, it's his second win of the year and locks him into the playoffs despite sitting 13th in the season standings. It was the 12th career victory by the No. 48 team at a track that seven-time Cup champion Jimmie Johnson dominated in his prime.

Chase Elliott ran third and William Byron fourth, the latter's 11th straight top-10 finish.

Who's at the Back: Christopher Bell

How is a Joe Gibbs Racing driver on the list? After all, JGR leads all organizations with five victories in 13 Cup races this year. But Bell, after winning at the Daytona road course in February, has seemed to fall off the pace a bit.

Dover saw him finish 21st, four laps down, posting his fourth consecutive finish outside the top 10. Bell has led just 14 laps in the 11 races since his Daytona triumph and slipped back to 12th in points, worst among the JGR quartet. His average finish of 15.3 is just a tick better than Erik Jones a year ago (15.9) in what turned out to be a fire-able offense for the latter.

News Briefs

Brad Keselowski has reportedly been offered an ownership stake in Roush Fenway Racing. The deal, which multiple outlets report "will happen," would move Keselowski from Team Penske to drive the No. 6 RFR Ford beginning with the 2022 Cup season. Ryan Newman, if the deal went through, would reportedly drive a part-time third car or leave the organization altogether.

The move is the first domino in NASCAR's Silly Season and has plenty of ramifications across the garage. I explore some of the winners and losers here. Unrelated to the rumors, RFR announced a sponsorship extension for Fastenal through 2024 on its No. 17 car and insisted Chris Buescher would be staying with their program for the next few seasons, as well.

North Carolina governor Roy Cooper announced $30 million of the money received by the state for COVID-19 recovery will go to revitalizing three tracks: Charlotte Motor Speedway, North Wilkesboro Speedway and Rockingham Speedway. North Wilkesboro has fallen into disrepair after being removed from the Cup schedule in 1996; Rockingham is also inactive and hasn't hosted any series in several years. It's unknown at this point whether the funding will be enough to reopen those two tracks.

NASCAR Goodyear 400 Cup Series Race At Darlington Free Online Live Streaming ,May 09,Sunday 2021

NASCAR Goodyear 400 Cup Series Race At Darlington online free live streaming 2021 high quality(HD) broadcast on Sunday ,May 09, Track: Darlington Raceway (Darlington, S.C.), Time: 3:30 p.m. ET. Watch NASCAR Goodyear 400 Cup Series Race At Darlington free live stream online Race on any device .You can follow to Watch NASCAR Goodyear 400 Cup Series Race At Darlington free live streaming from here details below.

Darlington Raceway is the site of this weekend's Goodyear 400, the perfect setting for NASCAR's annual Throwback Weekend. Here to preview the Cup Series' version of Halloween is Frontstretch.com's Zach Sturniolo.

Cars will be donned in paint schemes of eras gone by in stock-car racing's history, from Corey LaJoie's No. 7 Zerex Chevrolet in honor of 1992 champion owner and driver Alan Kulwicki all the way to Bubba Wallace's No. 23 Toyota which will honor Wendell Scott, NASCAR's pioneering Black driver.

The vehicles will even be running a throwback package, so to speak, as this year's Darlington events feature the 750 horsepower package as opposed to the 2020 races which used 550 HP motors. More power and less downforce mean drivers will be fighting for grip — and to avoid contacting the wall for a Darlington stripe — around the harrowing narrow lanes of the South Carolinian stock car staple.

NASCAR ran an unprecedented three races around the egg-shaped 1.336-mile track in 2020 to accommodate for canceled races across the schedule amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. Defending series champion Chase Elliott was fast in all three contests but left with only one top five to show for it, a fourth-place finish in NASCAR's first race back from a 10-week hiatus. Four days later, Elliott was wrecked by Kyle Busch just before the race was ended for rain before a 20th-place result in the Labor Day Southern 500.

Perhaps, though, Kevin Harvick should be the driver we focus on heading into Sunday's (3:30 p.m. ET, FS1) race. Harvick won two of the three races at Darlington last season, and despite his uncharacteristically rough start to 2021, rebounded last week at Kansas Speedway for a season-best second-place finish. Any time Harvick and crew chief Rodney Childers have some semblance of momentum, the field should be on high alert.

Winning the second and shortest Darlington race last year, of course, was Denny Hamlin. The current Cup Series points leader is a true ace of "The Lady in Black," posting three victories, nine top fives and 13 top 10s in 17 Darlington starts with wins in two of the last four years.

Surely those three will be strong contenders come Sunday. Yet Elliott, Harvick and Hamlin all remain winless through 11 races of the 2021 season while 10 others have already found ways to victory lane.

Pencil those three into the playoffs now — there is zero chance any of those guys miss the postseason. Certainly, though, time is moving right along. We're nearly halfway through the regular season, and chances to add playoff points — a cushion throughout a playoff run — are dwindling rapidly. That could mean an early exit if other drivers start racking up multiple victories before they claim their first.

Those are the guys who know what it's like to win. What about a guy who is looking for his first taste of triumph in the Cup Series? A guy like Tyler Reddick?

Reddick was the unfortunate victim of an uncontrolled tire penalty last weekend at Kansas, the tire of which became a hot-button topic across NASCAR fans and media members after officials waited 15 laps to display the caution flag for debris.

With that in his rearview mirror, Reddick looks to excel this weekend at a track that perfectly fits his driving style: ripping the high line against the wall on a track with an abrasive surface. That technique earned him a second-place finish at Homestead-Miami Speedway in March. Can it work for him this weekend at Darlington?

So what's it going to be this weekend? Will we get a throwback winner with a veteran who's been there before? Or will we get a look at NASCAR's future with a new victor instead?

Goodyear 400

Date: Sunday, May 9

Time: 3:30 p.m. ET

Track: Darlington Raceway (Darlington, S.C.)

TV: FS1

Radio: MRN, SIRIUS XM Channel 90

Starting Lineup for Sunday's Goodyear 400

Who's at the Front: Denny Hamlin

Hamlin knows how to get around Darlington better than almost anybody in the field. Being in elite equipment helps too. Joe Gibbs Racing has won six of the last 13 races at this notoriously difficult track. And while Hamlin hasn't found a way to victory lane yet this year, his stat lines have been ludicrously good: eight top fives and only three finishes outside the top 10: 11th at Homestead, 12th at Kansas and 32nd at Talladega Superspeedway.

Good runs elsewhere don't often equate to strong performances at Darlington. But Hamlin may just be an exception to that rule.

Who's at the Back: Joey Logano

What a rough two weeks it has been for Logano. On April 25, he was sent flying through the air before landing on his roof at Talladega and finished 39th. At Kansas, the No. 22 team was a complete non-factor while his Team Penske teammates Brad Keselowski and Ryan Blaney were contenders all day. On top of battling food poisoning, Logano finished 17th. Even Matt DiBenedetto, Wood Brothers Racing's driver and a Team Penske affiliate, came home with a top five.

Logano will need a bounce-back run this weekend at Darlington to regain some traction after his worst two races of 2021. Luckily for him, he's already got a victory at the Bristol dirt race to lock him into the playoffs.

News Briefs

NASCAR unveiled its look of the future on Wednesday with the Next Gen versions of the Chevrolet Camaro, Ford Mustang and Toyota Camry. The looks are radically different, as are the specifications of the cars as a majority of parts will now come from common vendors as opposed to being made in-house.

Four tracks announced this week they will be back to full capacity next time the Cup Series hits town. Pocono Raceway announced Tuesday its June 26-27 doubleheader weekend will operate under 100 percent capacity. On Friday, Daytona International Speedway, Kansas Speedway and Darlington announced its COVID capacity limits would also be lifted for their events later this season.

In sad news, former NASCAR Xfinity Series driver Eric McClure passed away Sunday at the age of 42. The nephew of famed former Cup Series team co-owner Larry McClure, Eric McClure made 288 career starts in the sport's second-tier Xfinity Series with a career-best finish of eighth at Daytona in 2013.

NASCAR By the Numbers

4

Sunday's race marks the seventh year of NASCAR's throwback celebration. Since then, four throwback schemes have found their ways into victory lane: Hamlin twice, Erik Jones in 2019 and Harvick one year ago.

6

The Goodyear 400 will be the 12th race of the season and already 10 drivers have punched their tickets into the postseason. That means only six spots remain unclaimed with over half the regular seasons still remaining. One, of course, will go to the regular-season champion. The other five may come from winners we've yet to see.

Playing the Odds (Fantasy Spin)

Top Tier

Kevin Harvick is the driver that needs to be on your fantasy lineup this weekend. The 2014 Cup Series champion has an unbelievable streak of nine straight top 10s at Darlington dating back to 2013, a period that includes three wins (2014, 2020 twice) and eight top fives. In fact, Harvick has five straight top-five finishes and with 201 laps led over that span at the track "Too Tough to Tame." I think someone forgot to tell Harvick.

You also may be tired of reading Denny Hamlin's name in this preview, but with a win and two top fives in his last three Darlington starts, Hamlin should be on your radar this weekend. His recent laps-led total isn't impressive — just 31 laps led over the past four races — but somehow, the No. 11 Toyota finds its way to the front.

Consider throwing Kyle Busch onto your list as well. In 18 starts, the two-time Cup champion has finished in the top 10 an astounding 12 times, including in five of the last seven races. Busch led 118 laps in 2019, but don't expect him to lead a ton this year. Those were his only laps led in the last four Darlington races. Nonetheless, Busch will be up front this weekend.

Middle Tier

William Byron has found amazing consistency with rookie Cup crew chief Rudy Fugle atop the pit box, becoming the youngest driver in NASCAR history to claim nine straight top-10 finishes after last week's ninth-place run at Kansas. Darlington has proved tricky for the driver of the No. 24 car, but he earned his best finish at the track in last year's Southern 500 by coming home fifth. With newfound confidence and momentum, keep Byron as an option this week.

Tyler Reddick may be another guy to keep an eye on this weekend. As a rookie in 2020, Reddick posted an excellent top-10 run in his Darlington debut by finishing seventh. However, the following two races at "The Lady in Black" resulted in finishes of 13th and 23rd respectively. He and Richard Childress Racing teammate Austin Dillon have shown recent speed though, and Dillon finished second here last fall. Both may sneak their way toward the front this weekend.

Lower Tier

Erik Jones found his way to this section last week at Kansas, but Darlington is one of the two tracks at which Jones has won. The 2019 Southern 500 winner has one win, four top fives and six top 10s in six Darlington starts. You read that right. Jones has never finished outside the top 10 in his Cup career at one of the most treacherous tracks on the circuit. His streak is in jeopardy in Richard Petty Motorsports equipment, but a win in Wednesday night's eNASCAR iRacing Pro Invitational Series shouldn't hurt momentum.

Ryan Newman is worth your consideration too. In his No. 6 Roush Fenway Racing Ford, Newman was extraordinarily consistent last year, finishing 15th, 14th and 15th at Darlington. He's also finished in the top 20 in nine of his last Darlington starts, which should nicely pad your fantasy lineup this week.

What Vegas Thinks

Kyle Larson is the odds-on favorite at 9/2 according to vegasinsider.com. That shouldn't come as a surprise considering Larson has finishes of third, 14th, second and third in his last four Darlington starts. Keep in mind, though, that he missed all three Darlington races in 2020 after his suspension. Behind Larson are Denny Hamlin at 6/1, Kevin Harvick at 7/1 and Martin Truex Jr. at 15/2 odds.

NASCAR has had its share of bizarre race names through the years. Just this February, the sport's Xfinity Series kicked off its schedule with the Beef. It's What's For Dinner 300. But the Buschy McBusch Race 400 is easily the strangest twist on sponsorship in recent memory.

This USA Today article does a good explainer of how we got here in 2021. Sponsor Anheuser-Busch ran a promotion allowing fans to pick the Cup Series race name if they donated a minimum of $1 to the nonprofit Farm Rescue. This tongue twister won out in the finals over such "gems" as the Busch Latte 400 and (let's all groan in unison) the Nectar of the Cobs 400.

Some fans who won't know better will think the Busch brothers are involved somehow. Maybe it'll at least change their luck? Kansas remains one of the worst tracks for Kyle Busch in particular; he's won just once here while a career 15.7 average finish is his worst for any 1.5-mile oval. Brother Kurt has never won here, period, while posting a mediocre 15.9 average finish all his own.

Can the brothers turn it around this Sunday (3 p.m. ET, FS1) with their last names so prominently featured? Both have yet to visit victory lane in a season with nine different winners in the first 10 races. Kurt Busch has even fallen outside of playoff position with just one top-15 result since Phoenix Raceway in early March. Combined, the duo has led just 17 laps all season, a total that trails drivers like Daniel Suarez, Matt DiBenedetto and Bubba Wallace who have all never won a Cup race, period.

But the former champion to watch may be the man who finished runner-up here last fall: Kevin Harvick. It was here Harvick's career year began to unravel in the form of a Kansas tornado known as Joey Logano. Pit strategy snuck Logano out front, and from there, it was prevent defense personified as Harvick found himself unable to pass despite fresher tires and a faster Stewart-Haas Racing Ford.

The missed opportunity proved costly. A few weeks later, Harvick's nine-win season was all for naught as a series of poor performances kept him from reaching the Championship 4. It feels like the No. 4 team has yet to recover, starting the year 0-for-10 with just 29 laps led overall. It's Harvick's worst stat line at this point in the year since moving to SHR in 2014.

The low-horsepower handling package that stopped Harvick in his tracks that October Sunday led to calls for change in 2021. It didn't happen, NASCAR keeping the status quo one last year before moving to the NextGen car in 2022. Perhaps the heat of the day in Kansas (it'll be nearly 80 degrees on Sunday) will lead to a slicker track and more passing opportunities?

Logano certainly hopes so, forced to come from 29th starting spot this time around after a vicious wreck at Talladega Superspeedway. Kyle Larson (32nd) and Kurt Busch (28th) are among several big-name drivers needing to work their way through traffic this weekend.

History is on Logano's side as he fights to the front: all but one driver who's won here in the past decade can call themselves a Cup Series champion. The lone exception is Denny Hamlin, whose three Daytona 500 victories and multiple Championship 4 appearances have him knocking on the door for a big trophy himself.

Will the heavyweights dominate again at another intermediate track? Or will a 2021 season full of surprises throw a curveball in honor of Buschy McBusch?

Buschy McBusch Race 400

Date: Sunday, May 2

Time: 3 p.m. ET

Track: Kansas Speedway (Kansas City, Kan.)

TV: FS1

Radio: MRN, SIRIUS XM Channel 90

Starting Lineup for Sunday's Buschy McBusch Race 400 at Kansas Speedway

Who's at the Front: Brad Keselowski

Team Penske is now 3-for-3 in clinching playoff spots thus far in 2021 after Keselowski taught a master class in the Talladega draft. After a mid-race spin for teammate Logano's hard wreck, the driver of the No. 2 Ford bided his time, letting his crew fix up some wrinkled sheet metal while waiting for the right opportunity to make his move. During an overtime finish, he pounced, blowing by Matt DiBenedetto in crunch time with the help of Daytona 500 winner Michael McDowell.

That final-lap pass became the only lap Keselowski led the entire race. But that's the one that counts, earning him a sixth career victory at this track to lead all active drivers.

Who's at the Back: Kyle Larson

Larson dominated the race at Atlanta Motor Speedway back in March only to get passed by Ryan Blaney down the stretch. Since then, he's failed to lead a lap and posted only one top-5 finish in four races, dropping from second to ninth in the Cup standings.

The No. 5 Chevrolet hit rock bottom at Talladega, when a crew member forgot to remove a piece of metal separating its radiator and the air ducts. No practice or qualifying meant no one on the crew caught the mistake before the drop of the green; Larson's engine was toast three laps in.

News Briefs

Kaulig Racing will be moving up to the Cup Series full-time in 2022. After driver Kaz Grala posted a career-best sixth in the Talladega race Sunday, owner Matt Kaulig told SIRIUS XM Radio the team was preparing for a full-time effort in conjunction with the introduction of NASCAR's NextGen car. Kaulig currently has three full-time NASCAR Xfinity Series programs, manned by Jeb Burton, Justin Haley and AJ Allmendinger.

The 2021 NASCAR All-Star Race format has been revealed. The event at Texas Motor Speedway in June will be six rounds totaling 100 laps, with the winner receiving the lion's share of the customary $1 million bonus. This time around, $100,000 will be awarded to the pit crew who pulls off the fastest stop in round five of the format.

Atlanta Motor Speedway announced this week they'll open at full capacity when the Cup Series returns to the 1.5-mile oval in July. NASCAR also is planning to allow a limited number of guests to enter the garage area beginning with next weekend's event at Darlington Raceway.

NASCAR by the Numbers

2

Top-10 finishes for Kaz Grala in just three career Cup starts. The 22-year-old was also seventh subbing for Austin Dillon last summer on the Daytona International Speedway road course.

3

Organizations who have accounted for nine of NASCAR's 10 wins this season: Team Penske, Joe Gibbs Racing and Hendrick Motorsports.

Playing the Odds (Fantasy Spin)

Top Tier

It's hard to bet against Denny Hamlin out in Kansas. The current NASCAR Cup point leader has three career wins at this track, including two of the past three races. He's led 268 laps during that stretch while collecting 47 points in stage bonuses. Extra credit comes with a 20th-place starting position that should produce a bushel of position differential points.

Martin Truex Jr. has slid back a bit compared to his Joe Gibbs Racing teammates at Kansas. Since moving over to the No. 19 Toyota in 2019, he's got just one top-5 finish in four starts. But 77 laps led during that stretch is pretty respectable for a guy who could provide more value at a lower price. Remember, back when Truex was with Furniture Row Racing, he swept both races here in 2017 en route to winning the Cup title.

At a track that rewards top contenders, I'm pushing three with Kevin Harvick. The Stewart-Haas Racing driver has just one finish outside the top 15 at this track since 2011, winning twice over the past five seasons. 85 laps led last fall plus Talladega momentum (fourth) equals hope there's momentum here to start a 2021 turnaround.

Middle Tier

Can Alex Bowman bounce back after Talladega disappointment? The surprise Richmond Raceway winner two weeks ago was eliminated in a midrace accident not of his making, producing a disappointing 25th starting spot for Sunday. Position differential potential makes him a juicy pick for a Kansas track where he's pulled off five straight top-11 finishes.

Austin Dillon quietly put together an 11th-place finish at Kansas last October. It was his best run since 2016 here for Richard Childress Racing at a track where he's produced three top-10 finishes throughout his career. Expect him to be a great value pick for Sunday.

Lower Tier

Can Erik Jones bring his Kansas Speedway magic to Richard Petty Motorsports? He's got five top-10 finishes in his last six races there, slipping to 20th last October. Of course, all those runs were in the Joe Gibbs Racing No. 20 Toyota, not the single-car, underfunded No. 43 he's in now.

Corey LaJoie isn't mentioned here often. All the more reason to pick him as the driver of Spire Motorsports' No. 7 car. LaJoie was 21st and 23rd in the Kansas Cup races last year, making him a sneaky underdog pick at bargain prices.

What Vegas Thinks

Denny Hamlin leads the way for this weekend with 6/1 odds according to vegasinsider.com. Martin Truex Jr. is next up at 13/2, just ahead of five other drivers knotted together at 8/1.

Believe in the Buschy McBusch effect? Kurt Busch is sitting at 30/1 as a longshot.
